30 Days of Night is a rare example of a horror movie that combines chills, thrills, and gore with a compelling story and characters. It also offers a fresh take on the vampire genre, presenting them as savage, animalistic, and ruthless predators that have their own language and culture. The movie was directed by David Slade, who also helmed Hard Candy (2005) and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010), and written by Steve Niles, Stuart Beattie, and Brian Nelson. The movie stars Josh Hartnett as Sheriff Eben Oleson, Melissa George as Stella Oleson, Danny Huston as Marlow, Ben Foster as The Stranger, Mark Boone Junior as Beau Brower, among others.

30 Days of Night received mixed reviews from critics but has since developed a cult following among horror fans. It was produced on a budget of $30 million and grossed over $75 million at the box office worldwide. It also spawned two direct-to-video sequels, Dark Days (2010) and Dust to Dust (2008), as well as a prequel web series, Blood Trails (2007). In this article, we will explore the story behind the movie, its cast and crew, its reception and The Story Behind the Movie

From Comic to Screen

30 Days of Night was originally a comic book miniseries created by writer Steve Niles and artist Ben Templesmith. It was published by IDW Publishing in 2002 and consisted of three issues. The comic was inspired by Niles' idea of what would happen if vampires attacked a town in Alaska during the polar night, when the sun does not rise for 30 days. He pitched the idea to several film studios, but they all rejected it, saying that vampires were not popular at the time. He then decided to turn his idea into a comic book, with the help of Templesmith, who provided the distinctive art style that captured the dark and cold atmosphere of the story.

The comic book was a success, and soon attracted the attention of film producers. In 2004, Columbia Pictures acquired the rights to adapt the comic into a movie, with Sam Raimi, the director of The Evil Dead (1981) and Spider-Man (2002), as one of the producers. Niles was hired to write the screenplay, along with Stuart Beattie, who had written Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), and Brian Nelson, who had written Hard Candy (2005). The screenplay followed the comic closely, but also added some new characters and scenes to expand the story.

The Setting and the Vampires

One of the most unique aspects of 30 Days of Night is its setting. The movie takes place in Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost town in the United States. Barrow is located above the Arctic Circle, and experiences a phenomenon called polar night, when the sun does not rise above the horizon for a period of time. In Barrow, this period lasts for about 65 days, from late November to late January. The movie exaggerates this duration to 30 days, for dramatic purposes.

The setting provides a perfect opportunity for a vampire attack, as the town is isolated, dark, and cold. The movie portrays the vampires as a group of nomads who travel around the world, hunting humans for food. They are led by Marlow, a charismatic and ruthless leader who speaks an ancient vampire language that was created for the movie by linguist Mark Okrand, who also created the Klingon language for Star Trek.

The vampires in 30 Days of Night are different from the traditional ones seen in other movies and books. They are not affected by garlic, crosses, or holy water. They do not have fangs, but rather sharp teeth that can tear through flesh and bone. They do not have any romantic or sexual interest in humans, but rather see them as prey. They are fast, strong, and agile, and can jump from one building to another. They are also intelligent and organized, and use various strategies to trap and kill their victims.

The Cast and Crew

The Main Characters

The movie features a talented cast of actors who bring the characters to life. Here are some of the main characters and their roles in the story:

  • Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett): He is the sheriff of Barrow and the main protagonist of the movie. He is brave, loyal, and resourceful, and tries to protect his town from the vampire invasion. He is also estranged from his wife Stella, who is a fire marshal.

  • Stella Oleson (Melissa George): She is Eben's wife and a fire marshal who works for the federal government. She is smart, strong-willed, and compassionate, and tries to reconcile with Eben during the crisis. She also helps him fight against the vampires.

  • Marlow (Danny Huston): He is the leader of the vampires and the main antagonist of the movie. He is charismatic, cunning, and cruel, and has no regard for human life. He speaks an ancient vampire language and commands his followers with authority.

  • The Stranger (Ben Foster): He is a mysterious man who arrives in Barrow before the vampire attack. He is actually a human who works for Marlow as a scout and a saboteur. He is creepy, eccentric, and sadistic, and enjoys watching people suffer.

  • Beau Brower (Mark Boone Junior): He is a local snowplow driver who becomes one of Eben's allies. He is gruff, brave, and humorous, and uses his snowplow as a weapon against the vampires.

  • Other characters: The movie also features other characters who play important roles in the story, such as Billy Kitka (Manu Bennett), Eben's deputy and friend; Jake Oleson (Mark Rendall), Eben's younger brother; Lucy Ikos (Elizabeth Hawthorne), the town's communications operator; John Riis (Peter Feeney), the town's power plant manager; Carter Davies (Nathaniel Lees), the town's helicopter pilot; and Denise (Amber Sainsbury), Stella's friend and colleague.

The Director and the Writers

The movie was directed by David Slade, a British filmmaker who started his career as a music video director. He made his feature film debut with Hard Candy (2005), a psychological thriller starring Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson. He then directed 30 Days of Night (2007), which was his first horror movie and his first adaptation of a comic book. He later directed The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010), the third installment of the popular vampire romance franchise, and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018), an interactive sci-fi movie for Netflix. He also directed several episodes of acclaimed TV shows, such as Hannibal, American Gods, and Barkskins.

The screenplay of the movie was written by Steve Niles, Stuart Beattie, and Brian Nelson. Steve Niles is the creator of the original comic book miniseries, as well as other horror comics, such as Criminal Macabre, Freaks of the Heartland, and Simon Dark. He also wrote the screenplay for Dark Days (2010), the sequel to 30 Days of Night, and co-wrote the screenplay for The Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008), the sequel to The Lost Boys (1987).

Stuart Beattie is an Australian screenwriter who has written several blockbuster movies, such as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Collateral (2004), G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), and I, Frankenstein (2014). He also wrote and directed Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010), an adaptation of a popular Australian novel, and Australia Day (2017), a drama about racial tensions in Australia.

Brian Nelson is an American screenwriter who has written several horror and thriller movies, such as Hard Candy (2005), which he co-wrote with David Slade, Devil (2010), which he co-wrote with M. Night Shyamalan, and Rupture (2016), which he co-wrote with Steven Shainberg. He also wrote the screenplay
